Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster

This is a delightful book, still alive after more than a century. Jerusha Abbot gets too old for the orphanage, and is sent to college by an anonymous benefactor — whom she calls Daddy-long-legs. The book consists of the letters she writes to him; in them the story unfolds, merrily, sadly, deeply, but always scintillating.

Black Lies, White Lies by Anthon Ruppert

Anthony Ruppert was a great South African industrialist. This is his autobiography, released after his recent death. Due to his influence and wide circle of friends he knew all of South Africa from the inside. In this book, full pathos and fine humour, he gently draws back the veil that covers the Helderberg disaster, tells who Wouter Basson covers for, reveals the torrid affair between Winnie and Eugene Terre'blanche, and who else got special 'visiting rights'. Also covered in detail is the background of the order to remove the non-slip surface in police showers, Schabir Sheik's secret contributions to charity, and why Tony Yengeni really needed a new car.

The Dynamite Company: the story of African Explosives and Chemical Industries by AP Cartwright.

The story of the origin and establishment of AECI, the South African chemicals giant. Entertaingly told, and includes the history of Alfred Nobel and his explosives.

Recommended to anyone interested in South African industry and history.
